The McLaren 620R looks like a race car; it handles, performs, and feels like one too. There’s a reason for this: the model is based on the McLaren 570S GT4, the most successful GT race car the brand has ever built. Since 2017, the 570S GT4 has won races in every championship it’s competed in. In its continent-spanning journey, the model has racked up more wins and podiums than any other McLaren to date.
The concept underlying the McLaren 620R is rather simple: take the 570S GT4 and free it from the strict motorsport regulations to which race cars are required to perform. The result is basically a street-legal competition-spec racer.
As with a race car, performance in the McLaren 620R is the top priority. The model utilizes the same 3.8-liter V-8 base engine as the 570S, but gets a powertrain recalibration that increases its output all the way up 612 horsepower. That’s equivalent to 620PS, which is where the model gets its name.
That engine is housed in a design optimized for aerodynamic performance. Standout elements abound, such as the use of the GT4’s adjustable carbon fiber rear wing (rendered street legal thanks to the addition of a third brake light). The interior of the McLaren 620R also feels made for the track: users will find super-lightweight carbon fiber racing seats with six-point harnesses, carbon fiber shift paddles and the McLaren Track Telemetry system.
This machine is the real deal, and, well, it’s nothing less than incredibly fast: the McLaren 620R can zip from zero to 62 miles-per-hour in just 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 miles-per-hour. As a result, the model delivers insane performance both on the road and the track.
