Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education is vital to the automotive industry, as quality STEM education leads to the next generation of scientists and engineers that design, develop, and create new cars. With this in mind, McLaren and Goodwood collaborated at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom to create an initiative to support STEM education for students.
The McLaren STEM initiative included a series of talks from McLaren’s engineering talent and STEM ambassadors on the first two days of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. McLaren’s STEM ambassadors talked to students from primary school and upwards at the festival, as well as teenagers from around 18 schools from West Sussex and Hampshire at seminars run by the Goodwood Education Trust. Also, alongside a full-scale LEGO McLaren Senna car, McLaren’s STEM ambassadors were on-hand to talk to children and their parents throughout the four-day festival about what it’s like to work at the automaker.
“Working closely with Goodwood means we have a great opportunity at the Festival to promote STEM careers and to showcase to girls, boys, and parents alike what a fulfilling and exciting career they can have by studying STEM subjects at school and beyond.” – Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive

In addition to the STEM initiative at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren has long promoted better uptake of science subjects that lead to STEM careers. This includes supporting the UK STEM Awards, working with LEGO to take STEM talks to different regions, and partnering with the BBC on educational science programming.
