The 2020 McLaren Elva Has a Windshield “Made of Air”

How the McLaren Active Air Management System in the 2020 McLaren Elva Works

McLaren is continuously pushing the boundaries of automotive performance and driving enjoyment with its lineup of innovative exotic supercars. The most recent example of this is the all-new 2020 McLaren Elva. Along with its phenomenal driving dynamics and quick acceleration, the McLaren Elva features a unique open cockpit design with a windshield “made of air,” which is called the McLaren Active Air Management System (AAMS). Read more to find out how it works.

“Oasis of Calm” in the 2020 McLaren Elva

The McLaren Elva provides the best of both worlds for exotic roadster aficionados, for it enables you to enjoy an immersive driving experience with no roof, windshield, or windows — but without the discomfort of having the wind blowing on your face. This is accomplished with the groundbreaking McLaren Active Air Management System. The AAMS routes air from the nose of the Elva and channels it over the vehicle occupants, resulting in a calm stillness inside the cockpit. McLaren describes this as an “oasis of calm.” The AAMS consists of a carbon fiber deflector, a front clamshell outlet vent, and a large central inlet.

When driving at city speeds, the AAMS is inactive. When accelerating to higher speeds, the Elva automatically activates the AAMS. The carbon fiber deflector is raised, and air is channeled through a network of carbon-fiber veins at a 130-degree radius. When decelerating down to city speeds, the carbon fiber deflector is lowered and the AAMS is deactivated.
